Sophomore Brayden Reece (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) put together a strong finish to tie for second individually, and the Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team tied for third as a team Thursday afternoon as it hosted the Charger Classic at Lake Bracken Country Club.

Reece shot a 1-under-par 34 on the back nine to come in with a 2-over 73 on the day, putting him a shot back of medalist honors. Black Hawk’s Rielly McGranahan shot 72 to win by a stroke over Reece and Black Hawk’s trio of Alex Otto, Shayne Shepherd and Jake Luett. Reece was the only player on the day to shoot under par on either side.

Sandburg shot 312 to tie Highland for third place, with the Cougars winning a fifth-score tiebreaker. Black Hawk “Gold” won the event with a 292, and Black Hawk “Black” was second at 307. Sandburg and Highland finished four strokes ahead of fifth-place Southeastern (Iowa).

Sophomore Brady Grafton (Orion, Ill./Orion) also shot in the 70s of the Chargers, posting a 4-over 75. Bryce Grafton (Orion, Ill./Orion) shot 80, while freshmen Grant Campbell (Earlville, Ill./Earlville) and Matt Graves (Oneida, Ill./ROWVA) each carded an 84.

The Chargers return to the course this afternoon for the Kewanee Dunes Classic at 1:30 p.m. in Kewanee.
